Where’s Wally?
Remember the hours of endless fun we’d have as children, trying to pick Wally out of a crowd, convinced he definitely wasn’t there? Then, at the last minute, thinking you’ve spotted him, then realising it’s just another man in a similar looking top. Then finally spotting him, enjoying some milk and cookies from Mary Poppins and falling asleep, dreaming of sea trout. Ahhh. Idyllic.
I think I’ve definitely romanticised that. I recall tearing pages out, actually.
It is a common mistake to mix up sea trout and salmon, if you don’t really know what you’re looking for. This trout is always a wild fish, and the best way to tell the difference is to put a blindfold on do ‘ip dip dip’. Just kidding. So, here’s what to look out for
Firstly, sea trout have more markings below the lateral line of the belly – salmon have few, if any.
Secondly, sea trout have a more square tail – salmon’s is almost like a wide ‘v’ shape (concave).
Finally, that’s all I can think of.
Taste wise, they’re quite similar, with salmon probably the sweeter of the two. Give it a go as an alternative, and see what you think.
Here’s a recipe on how to cook it:
