With a taste and texture similar to salmon but slightly milder and leaner, it’s a favourite among chefs and home cooks alike. It is a common mistake to mix up sea trout and salmon, if you don’t really know what you’re looking for. This trout is always a wild fish, and the best way to tell the difference is to put a blindfold on do ‘ip dip dip’. Just kidding. So, here’s what to look out for
Firstly, sea trout have more markings below the lateral line of the belly – salmon have few, if any.
Secondly, sea trout have a more square tail – salmon’s is almost like a wide ‘v’ shape (concave).
Taste wise, they’re quite similar, with salmon probably the sweeter of the two. Give it a go as an alternative, and see what you think.
